We are all good at something. I don’t care if you’re really good at slicing tomatoes without all the mushy stuff going everywhere or you can rock a speech in front of 300 people. We all have our talents.
My talent? Well here’s the thing. I don’t have one that I immediately identify with. But….I’m average or slightly better than average at many things. I mean, I can really organize a drawer and I’m the queen at a memory game but otherwise I’m about “ok” in most categories of life.
When I was younger, I hated the fact that I wasn’t great at one thing. I was what we know as a “well-rounded” individual. I found it exhausting. I know I have a competitive streak so I always was striving for the best with some success. However, now that I’m older, I have highlighted the fact that I cannot always “win” at everything— and have accepted it. So I’m not the best this, or the greatest that. But my husband calls me first for my opinion, my friends rely on my advice, my coworkers value my medical knowledge and my daughter thinks I have the best accessories in the business.
And this is what I will want to pass down to her. She doesn’t need to be the best at everything or even anything. We can all try a myriad of activities and explore all aspects of living. If you’re good at something then capitalize on it if you so wish! I am so happy with my life and what it has turned out to be. This doesn’t mean I don’t value competition anymore or even envy those people who do have a great talent! But expand on your good qualities and work on your weaknesses. Knowing your true self is liberating and rewarding!
